How are General and Academic IELTS Different?

There are some differences between General IELTS and Academic IELTS, but there also many similarities. This chart compares the sections of both exams.

You can see that the listening and speaking sections are the same for both exams, but the reading and writing sections are different. However, in the reading section, the main difference between the General and Academic versions of the test is that the reading passages are different. In the writing section, both General and Academic students must write an essay; General students also need to write a letter, and Academic students also need to write a descriptive report.
The IELTS teacher was great. He was extremely professional and thoughtful. This school is much better than other schools.

Do You Need General IELTS or Academic IELTS?
To decide if you need to study Academic IELTS or General IELTS, please look at these questions then click one of the buttons:

Q. Do you want to go to university in Canada, or the UK, the USA etc?
If the answer to this question is yes, then you need to study academic IELTS.
Q. Do you need IELTS to get a professional license or certificate?
If the answer to this question is yes, then you probably need to study academic IELTS. However, some organizations such as the Ontario College of Nurses will accept either academic IELTS or general IELTS. If you can choose academic or general, you should choose general IELTS because it is a little easier.
Q. Do you need IELTS to become a permanent resident of Canada?
If the answer to this question is yes, then you need to study general IELTS.
Q. Do you want to study IELTS just to improve your general English?
If the answer to this question is yes, then you can choose to study either academic IELTS or general IELTS. The best choice might be to study both academic and general IELTS (by taking our full-time IELTS course) and then take the academic IELTS test because academic IELTS is likely to be more useful for your future.
Q. Do you need IELTS for another reason not mentioned here?
If the answer to this question is yes, then you should contact the person or organization that has asked you to study IELTS and find out which version of the test you need. You could also contact us to explain your situation. Our expert IELTS instructors may be able to help you decide between academic and general IELTS.
Both teachers are great. They show me how to approach the test and gain confidence in myself. I think that every school in Toronto should follow the writing and speaking model of this school.
